ADVICES FOR NEW PUPPY – OWNERS

The decision to buy a pup, to search for one, together with the breeder, is an important event in a family.

If you visit the breeder the responsibility for the future roommate was still in the hands of the breeder. You made a very relaxed maternity visit and enjoyed yourself looking at the playing puppies.

It was a happening to see those puppy's playing, eating, sleeping.

The puppies were biting in your shoelaces, your trouser-legs, and your hands. But always the breeder was around to solve the "problems".

Then the big moment arrives to take the little puppy with you to his or her new home and then the peeing indoors and the biting has to stop very soon.

In the beginning we have the tendency to be indulgent, for the pup has to accustom oneself to the new situation and the most important thing at that moment is the fact that the pup has to eat and grows well.

In this first period we are caring and protecting, we want nothing to happen to the pup.

This is very human and shows how very much we love the new dog and how well we do WE THINK.

PUPPY'S  ARE LEARNING AS QUICK AS LIGHTNING

The annoying matter is that puppy's at this age are learning very fast, the wrong things and the good things.

If you let your pup bite in your old shoe, he will bite in every shoe. He doesn't see the difference a shoe is a shoe.

If he is greeting you jumping against your legs from happiness and affection, he is allowed to do so all the time, even if he just had a swim or a mud bath.

If he may pull on the leach, he may do so when he is grown up.

As soon as the pup is in your home, you start with the education. How do you want your dog to be when he is grownup, you start purposeful with the education of your pup and the children in your family.

Make a list of the things that the dog is allowed to do and which not, before you get the dog.

You hang this at a place everyone can see it.

Talk about these agreements with your whole family and everyone has to agree to do so.

Don't let you tempt by the enormous charm, those beautiful brown eyes, that look at you, but raise your dog well to get a nice dog when he is grown up. This is so very important.

"A NOT WELL REASED JACK IS A DISASTER"

REWARD GOOD BEHAVIOURR; ignore at first the wrong behaviour

A few tips concerning the:

NOURISHMENT

We feed our puppies  3 times a day;

In the morning, at noon and in the eveningca. 30 – 40 gram dry dog food for puppies.

Once a week the puppies gets fresh meat.

These are average quantities.

Watch your dog carefully.

Is your dog not eating all his food, take the food away and give less the next time.

If your dog has got diarrhoea, diminish the food, you are giving the dog too much to eat.

The next day you are feeding a little bit more.

After a few weeks you are going to feed the pup twice a day.

When the dog has the age of 6 months, and get one's second teeth, you are going to feed adult food.

You have to feed a well-balanced food of a good trademark. Often not the food from the supermarket.

Don't feed tinned food, 90 % is water and the rest?????

Don't feed candy or sweets or other nice looking food, containing dyestuffs and aromas.

Watch out during the changing of the teeth:

-All milk teeth are getting out the cheek and doesn't stay put, the new teeth need space to grow.

All our puppies get Tahitian Noni Juice during their life from the first day till the moment they leave. Mom gets it from the moment when she is pregnant.

VACCINATION AND VERMIFUGE (get rid of the worms)

In the small book of the vet, where you find the grafting, vermifuge and control by the vet, you can see that the pup gets his second vaccination at the age of nine weeks, and the complete cocktail vaccination at thirteen weeks.

When you go to the vet for the vaccination let the vet check your pup. Talk with your vet about vermifuge and when you have to do so.

You should consult with your vet about the vaccination of

1-Kennel cough ( Bordetella, Para influenza)  (I don't know if this is the right translation )

If you are going on a puppiecourse, or you are coming on places with a high concentration of dogs, like in a pension diminish the chance of getting a very sic dog.

2-Rabies

This depends on the country you live in, are there many foxes??

3-Other vaccinations necessary in your country?

VERMIFUGE

In the first year of the life of a dog you have to vermifuge your dog on a regular basis. A young dog almost eats anything he finds when you are walking outside.

In the first year about 4 a 5 times a year. When the dog is grown up, 2 a 3 times a year will do.

This also depends on the area you live in, for example: are there many children in the neighbourhood? Are there a lot of cats or wild animals?

Hold your dog clean of fleas, especially when there are cats in the house, or a lot of hedgehog.

Fleas can give tapeworm.

HOUSE-TRAINING and the prevention of wrong behaviour

House training:

Let the dog relieves himself, do his nature ( his pee and shit ):

-After his nap, sleeping time (lift up, raise the dog and put him outdoors )

-After his food

-Before playing and after ( a dog has no time to pee when he is playing, little children don't have time either when they are busy)

-The first nights probably in the middle of the night ( he has no control on his bladder to hold it for 8 hours )

Use a bench to get your dog quickly house trained. A pup doesn't want to foul one's own nest.

If necessary you put a newspaper in the bench on which an accident can happen.

Don't get mad at the pup, when an accident occur. The fault is yours, you didn't pay attention at the behaviour of your dog. A puppy that has to pee, gets restless, unquiet, gasps, going to curve his back.

PREVENTION OF WRONG BEHAVIOUR

If you don't have time for your dog, or the dog has to rest, put the dog in the bench. The bench is on the same place.

Your dog can never show any wrong behaviour in his bench (think of demolishing, biting, do his pees or shit in the house). This means the dog is always a good well-behaved dog when you open his bench. You only open his bench when the dog is quit and not when he is howling or whine, because he is angry to get out.

This can be very difficult for you and the neighbours, but you have to win this first "battle".

You also have to learn to difference between whining from anger or because he has to do his needs.

If you do this right then you create a positive vicious circle. You can treat the dog in a positive way.

Put the dog beside your bed in the BENCH the first and second night, maybe a little bit longer.

If the pup starts to whine put your hand through the "barns", and let him know he is not alone.

Realise that his life has changed a lot : away from his brother and sisters, his mother (he has never be alone) , new surroundings, alone with you is a very very big step for a little pup.

When the pup is used to the bench, you can put the bench any place you like (no draughty

Place of course). The pup always takes his own "home" with him. He feels safe in his own bench.

When you drive your car, the pup in the bench and you can drive safely.

When you go on a visit or on a holiday, take the bench with you, the dog has his own safe place where he can stay if he has got to rest, or you don't have time for him.

We want you to use a bench well, not to put the dog for 8 hours away. That is cruelty to animals.

RAISING OF THE PUP

A few tips (also see previous)

1Go to a puppy class, this is good for you and for your pup. Your pup likes it to activities, things with you. You get a bond between you and your dog.

2Realise a Jack Russell only knows yes or now, nothing in between. Be FIRM, CONSISTENT, when you give a command, you make sure the dog does follow up this command, even when it takes an hour. When you know the dog isn't going to listen wait for a suitable moment and then give the command, so you know you will succeed.

3Give your dog the space to run free, to play with other dogs and start at once at the first day you have the pup. Don't be frightened the pup would run away. The pup is very frightened that he loses you. Take your profit from this moment. It has to be a road safety place off course.

4You start raising the pup from the first moment you have got the pup in your home. Don't think:"O, how sad!, what a pity!, such a little dog." The pup is sweet, but not pathetic, because when everything is right, the pup has got the most wonderful loving, firm boss.

5Show the pup everything in the first weeks, the bus, cars, trains, dustcart, schoolyard, children, the postman, the store etc.

6The dog has to learn your rhythm of life.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING

Love your dog, we did so the first weeks of his life.

Have humour, patience, and understanding and sometimes catch hold of your dog, because only with sweet talk you cannot raise a Jack Russell.

Call us, or mail us, when things are not going well, call us when it goes well, we want to know that to.

If you raise your pup well, you get the most wonderful dog in the world.
